The upcoming live-action Bleach movie has received a new teaser trailer that shows Ichigo Kurosaki (Sota Fukushi) becoming a shinigami for the first time with the help of Rukia Kuchiki (Hana Sugisaki) in order to defeat a rampaging Hollow outside his house.
It was already confirmed that the passionate project will center on the first “Substitute Shinigami” arc from the manga and be an origins story of sorts for the characters involved. Those who have read through the source materials or have watched the anime will find the teaser trailer fairly nostalgic.
Ichigo, with the inherent ability to see ghosts who are lost in our world, discovers Rukia one day in his bedroom. She is a shinigami herself and hence, is pretty shocked that a living person can actually see her. While they are arguing over what is real and not, a Hollow suddenly appears outside. These are souls that have lingered in this world for too long and have been corrupted with malice.
Rukia heads out to defeat the Hollow, but so does Ichigo in order to protect his family. His reckless charge forces Rukia to shield him with her body and she gets severely injured. With the threat still in their midst, Rukia plunges her Zanpakuto into Ichigo to give him half of her powers. This transforms him into a “substitute shinigami” and he makes short work of the Hollow afterwards.
The live-action Bleach movie was revealed to be in the works back in October 2016 and will premiere in Japanese theaters on July 20, 2018. It has been directed by Shinsuke Sato, who has previously helmed similar live-action adaptations of popular manga series such as Death Note: Light Up the New World and I am a Hero.
For those unaware, Bleach is one of the most popular and successful manga series around. The franchise began back in 2001 under creator Tite Kubo before it got the anime treatment three years later. Since then, both the manga and anime have garnered a tremendous following across the globe.
