Now that the remake of Shadow of the Colossus has been released onto the Playstation 4, the first reports of Shadow of the Colossus sales are being released, and they are, essentially, colossal. The game has been reported to have dwarfed the original game’s sales in the United Kingdom on PS4.
Shadow of the Colossus is seen as a classic of video games, and indeed one of the greatest of all time, even if it doesn’t really have much to go on in terms of storytelling. However, its graphics and gameplay and unique world, all emphasized by the game’s remastering onto the Playstation 4 instead of the Playstation 2 or 3, have only made it better.
The Shadow of the Colossus sales figures only count physical releases, too, something that wouldn’t have been considered back in the days of the game’s original release. Digital releases, which are getting more and more prevalent across the gaming world as more convenient than physical releases, haven’t been tracked apparently.
The physical releases for the game, however, are up 73 percent over the game’s original release back in 2006. It’s likely that all the hype that the game has gotten since its original release, plus old fans that bought it to reconnect with one of their favorite games, have contributed to the huge amounts of sales.
Team ICO also had another force in its corner in the form of The Last Guardian, which released back in December of 2016 after years of delays. That game’s critical acclaim catapulted Team ICO into the spotlight once again, and probably gave them the impetus that allowed them to re-release Shadow of the Colossus.
The Shadow of the Colossus sales also helped the game to rise to the top of the UK sales charts, over games like Super Mario Odyssey, Monster Hunter World, and Call of Duty: WW2.
