Is It Time for a New Red Faction Game? Would You Play It?

With THQ filing for bankruptcy back in 2012, future of most of the titles owned by THQ is still unknown. One of the most remembered franchises from THQ is the Red Faction Franchise.

Although the latest game in the series, Red Faction: Armageddon turned out to be a major failure for the company due to its poor sales, the franchise still gave us some of the best titles ever since its release back in 2001.

The first Red Faction game was released in 2001 on Playstation 2 and PC. It set the pace for the future of the franchise with its brilliant story concept and amazing gameplay elements. One of the most prominent features of this game was its engine, which allowed the player to alter the terrain and the surrounding environment.

This was huge at that time, no other game allowed such level of detail and graphics, and we loved playing it. The first game was so popular that in 2016, it came back on PS4 as a PSN exclusive purchase with some modern features. Below you can check out the trailer of the original Red Faction game that came out in 2001.

After the success of the first game, a second title was released later in 2002. It was a direct sequel of the game and it had all the good elements from the original title and added even more and refined features. After the second title, THQ took a long break and finally released the third title Red Faction: Guerrilla in 2009.

The third title in the franchise switched from the FPS genre and aimed at the third-person shooter genre. It came with the Geomod 2.0 engine, which was an improved version of the original Geomod engine. However, it did not allow the destruction of the terrain. However, everything else was destructible and allowed the player to play with the environment a lot.

The game featured a massive open-world and opposing EDF forces were very agile in protecting their districts. It also featured a multiplayer mode where players could take part in online battles and earn experience.

It also had three expansion packs, which added to the already huge world of Red Faction – Guerilla. Until the third game, the franchise seemed to be doing very well for itself as well as THQ.

The fourth and the last game of the franchise was officially announced on Jun 10, 2010. It carried the title Armageddon and it was set 50 years after the events of Red Faction Guerilla. It was supposed to pave way for future title of the Red Faction franchise but despite receiving decent reviews, it resulted in very poor sales. The impact of the sales were huge and THQ announced the end of the Red Faction franchise after Armageddon. Not much time after, THQ filled in for bankruptcy and sold off all of its assets including Red Faction franchise.

Now owned by THQ Nordic, previously Nordic Games, There have been no word on a new Red Faction game for a long time. Another such franchise, long lost was Darksiders, but recently, THQ Nordic announced a new game, next in the franchise, Darksiders III in development and to be released soon. This gives us a ray of hope that THQ Nordic might be interested in a new Red Faction game as well.

Despite the failure of the last game, THQ Nordic can look into factors, which led to Armageddon’s poor sales, work on them, and use the power of the current-gen to develop a new Red Faction game as most of the people would love to revisit the world of Red Faction.

Instead of shutting down the franchise, Red Faction deserves another chance and if given proper attention and though into the development of a new Red Faction game, THQ Nordic can kick start an amazing franchise back again.

Personally, we would love to give the Red Faction franchise another chance. Tell us in the comments below will you be interested in playing a new Red Faction game if it ever came out?
