Thor’s New Weapon in Avengers: Infinity War, Goodbye Mjolnir

By   /   Jan 29, 2018

The events of Thor: Ragnarok from last year saw the goddess of death Hela, played by Cate Blanchett, completely destroy the mighty Mjolnir with her bare hands. While the thunder god, played by Chris Hemsworth, ended up defeating his evil sister and save his fellow Asgardians, fans were left wondering whether the enchanted hammer would be restored for the conflict in Avengers: Infinity War.

It turns out that it will probably not be. Thor will instead be wielding a new weapon for the battle of survival against Thanos this summer. This belief is based on a number of past reports, with the latest being a Funko Pop! figure that was leaked earlier today.

Avengers: Infinity War will have Thor brandish a fabled viking axe going further into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This new weapon is known as Jarnbjorn, the wrecker of worlds, in the comic books, and is actually what Thor wielded before he was deemed worthy enough to pick up Mjolnir.

There is naturally a history behind Jarnbjorn and how it came to be but due to the lack of time, the Russo brothers are probably going with a minimal scene through which Thor will forge his new weapon in the movie.

Rumors for Jarnbjorn began circulating as far back as last February when a concept art released for Avengers: Infinity War depicted Thor gripping a strange, long-handled weapon. Fans knew then with certainty that it was not Mjolnir. However, there are also rumors–slim at best–that suggest the hammer to return in its original form at some point in the saga.

Our trusty and informative piece in Lore Guard will help you familiarize with Jarnbjorn and how it came to be in the comic books.

Avengers: Infinity War will hit theaters on May 4, 2018. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
