Lore Guard: Things to Know About Thor’s Jarnbjorn Before You Watch Avengers: Infinity War

By   /   Jan 29, 2018

It has been pretty much confirmed that Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, will be wielding Jarnbjorn in Avengers: Infinity War instead of the mighty Mjolnir, which presently lies shattered at the hands of the goddess of death Hela, played by Cate Blanchett, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It will undoubtedly surprise moviegoers to see the thunder god without his signature hammer but the fact is that Jarnbjorn has deep roots in the comic books and is no stranger when it comes to the mythos.

Here is what you need to know before Thor brandishes Jarnbjorn against the dark forces of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War this summer. Most of the following will probably be skipped from the movie adaptation but you will at least have a better understanding of where this new enchanted weapon fits in the lore.

The origins of Jarnbjorn

Jarnbjorn is a looming battle axe that was wielded by Thor in the comic books for centuries before he was deemed worthy enough to pick up Mjolnir. The weapon, also known as the wrecker of worlds, was forged by the dwarves from Nidavellir. This is the same race that eventually forged the mystical hammer down the line at the behest of Odin. Both of them are made from Uru, a unique metal ore that is able to store magic.

Jarnbjorn has been used by Thor as his primary weapon against a plethora of supervillains and ancient foes across the universe. Hence, the fearsome frost giants of Jotunheim have had the honor of being smashed by both Jarnbjorn and Mjolnir.

The battle axe has also faced off against the likes of Apocalypse, the principal antagonist for the X-Men and one of the most powerful beings in Marvel Comics. However, Jarnbjorn was unable to pierce the Celestial armor of Apocalypse. Thor had to ultimately bless the weapon with his own blood to give it the power needed to defeat the alien technology.

Thor eventually lost Jarnbjorn. The weapon changed hands quite a lot in the comic books over the years. Baron Mordo, one of the main adversaries of Doctor Strange, obtained it at one point. The battle axe was then recovered by the time-traveling Kang the Conqueror, one of the greatest supervillains of all time, before being stolen by Uriel and Eimin, the twin children of Archangel and Ichisumi who became to be known as the Apocalypse Twins.

The lengthy arc continued through a diabolical plan to fool the Celestial Exitar to destroy Earth. However, Thor managed to reclaim Jarnbjorn just in time to kill the ancient exterminator by striking its neck.

Jarnbjorn was replaced in the Asgardian armory when Thor picked up Mjolnir. However, the thunder god has gone back to retrieve the weapon whenever he was unable to wield Mjolnir for whatever reason. This has happened on more than one occasion.

The powers of Jarnbjorn

Jarnbjorn has a charm placed on it that makes it nearly indestructible. In fact, some fans have theorized that it might be even more durable than Mjolnir. In that light, the weapon can defend against attacks that would leave even the most powerful superheroes dazed.

Jarnbjorn is sharper than anything on Earth and can slice through pretty much everything. The weapon was already powerful but the second enchantment through Thor and his Asgardian blood gave it new attributes. The Celestial armor of Apocalypse, one that Wolverine cannot even scratch with his adamantium claws, can be easily sliced by Jarnbjorn. In addition, the battle axe was able to cut off the left arm of Thor when Malekith, ruler of the dark elves, was able to obtain it in a conflict.

Finally, much like Mjolnir, Thor can send Jarnbjorn flying at his foes from great distance. It also looks much more overwhelming than the miniature sledgehammer, but that is a personal opinion.
