The much-awaited sixth installment in the action-espionage franchise, one of the highest-grossing ones in the movie industry, will be titled Mission: Impossible Fallout.
Tom Cruise, who will be reprising his role as agent Ethan Hunt once again, took to social media earlier today to share a clapperboard to confirm the new moniker.
In addition, the award-winning actor released a scene from the movie where he is dangling from an airborne helicopter somewhere in snow-capped mountains. Cruise, despite his age, is apparently still dedicated to performing his own stunts where possible.
Speaking with Empire in a rushed interview, director Christopher McQuarrie pointed out that the title of the movie actually teases the synopsis in more than one ways.
There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat. There’s [also] the notion that what’s happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It’s Ethan’s past come back to haunt him. It’s the fallout of all his good intentions.
The theme of nuclear annihilation has been a major part of the plot in past installments in the series and hence, is not new to Mission: Impossible Fallout. Hunt having to face consequences for his past actions is also not new to the series but may be undertaken at a deeper level. The tragic loss of his wife and betrayals from within the spy agency have both followed in past releases but have seldom affected the main events.
There are still no concrete details on the plot but considering that the movie premiers in summers, a trailer should be dropping in the coming months.
Mission: Impossible Fallout opens in theaters on July 27, 2018. It will see Henry Cavill, Vanessa Kirby, and Angela Bassett join the franchise for the first time.
