Red Dead Redemption released back in 2009 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Like many other reviewers, IGN received a copy of the game as well but interestingly, that copy has somehow found its way online. Details about the contents of the Red Dead Redemption preview build even point to a happy end for John Marston.
According to a Reddit post by the person who got his hands on IGN’s Red Dead Redemption preview build, there are many features that never made it to the final build. There were two modes in the game – Story mode and Free Roam. The story mode was the one we received and played but the free roam, it seems, was exclusive to reviewers.
In the free roam mode players start their game from Beecher’s Hope with John Marston. The entire map is unlocked, every point of interest, safehouses are discovered. No story missions are available in the free roam but players can choose which mission to play from the main menu.
The last one is ‘And The Truth Will Set You Free’ (killing Dutch), which makes me guess that Rockstar showed reviewers some kind of ‘happy end’ with John’s story, whole finale ‘family’ segment is missing.
There is a possibility that John Marston had a happy end with his family in the Preview Build. However, we know how things turned out for him.
Besides these, there are minor differences such as fonts etc.
As for Red Dead Redemption 2, the game is releasing on PlayStation 4, Xbox One later this year. We hope that the game will make it to PC sometime in the future as well.
