Platinum Games’ Two New IPs Won’t Suffer the Same Fate as Scalebound

Platinum Games, the creator of some of the best and unique titles out there, is currently working on two new IPs. What they are and when will they come out is anyone’s guess right now, however, both games are going to be self-published by the company.

According to the studio, they wish to self-publish both games which shows that they are not ready to allow second parties to interfere in their projects. Depending on the size of their vision for the new games, they may have to crowdfund or raise funding from other sources to publish.

Just a few months ago, Microsoft canceled Scalebound, a game that Platinum Games worked on for a long time. Both companies had a difference of opinion regarding the vision for the project so it ended up on the shelve, possibly forever.

Platinum Games developers were “very disappointed” by the outcome. In fact, one of the producers ended up leaving the studio. CEO Kenichi Sato stated:

We’re sorry to say that on January 9, 2017, Microsoft Studios announced the cancellation of Scalebound. We are very disappointed things ended up this way, especially since we know many of our fans were looking forward to this game as much as we were.

The CEO pledged his commitment to not allow something like that to happen again. And now a year later, Platinum Games plans to move to self-publishing model for development.

Currently, the studio is working on Bayonetta 3 for Nintendo Switch. Meanwhile, there are reports that say Scalebound might be back in development. However, that is not something we can say for sure right now. But what we can be sure about is that Platinum Games will not be involved if/when Scalebound returns!
