Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” will be the closest to an official Overwatch film adaptation that the community can expect to enjoy for now.
The upcoming science-fiction blockbuster from the renowned director, based on the bestselling novel by Ernest Cline, follows the journey of Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) as he attempts to search for an easter egg that is hidden deep within a virtual reality world called the Oasis.
Ready Player One will feature a number of pop culture references such as the Iron Giant, King Kong, Freddy Krueger, and the DeLorean. Considering the theme, there will also be an abundance of video characters making appearances.
Duke Nukem was already revealed previously. The latest trailer for Ready Player One has now confirmed Tracer from Overwatch. She can be seen charging a battlefield, what looks to be from the Star Wars Battlefront franchise, with a large group of characters at about the 2:04 mark.
Overwatch has sold more than 35 million copies across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. From the time it released last year, Blizzard has been collecting accolades and milestones one after another in recognition for its brilliance.
It is hard to deny that even Hollywood has taken notice, especially when publisher Activision is also interested in either a film adaptation or an animated series for the game.
As for why Steven Spielberg ended up choosing Tracer from the entire roster of heroes in Overwatch to be featured in Ready Player One, she is after all the poster child of the game.
Ready Player One is scheduled to release in theaters worldwide on March 30, 2018. It is kind of exciting to know that one of the most popular characters in Overwatch is finally making her silver screen debut.
