Apparently, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 microtransactions may not be coming back after they were stripped from the game the night before its release. Despite EA claiming that after being revamped the microtransactions would be returning, the huge negative reaction to them and the game’s poor sales might have stopped that idea.
The reaction has included governments in multiple countries starting to discuss the possibility of banning loot boxes under the label of gambling, along with a boycott that has resulted in the game’s sales being 60% less than the first Battlefront game that came out in 2015.
A petition has even sprung up recently that’s calling on Disney to strip the Star Wars license away from EA, keeping them from making Star Wars games unless Disney allows them to. It’s not that far outside the realm of possibility, especially since Disney apparently called EA and put pressure on them to remove the microtransactions before the game launched.
The Battlefront 2 microtransactions aren’t the only issue with the game either: EA has also offered a bogus explanation as to why unlike the previous Battlefront game, that there’s no opportunity for customization among the various characters you can use.
While EA has said that they don’t want to deviate from canon (despite already having game modes where heroes from different eras can fight each other), a dataminer has also come across a customization option by hacking the game.
Whether Battlefront 2 microtransactions are coming back or not, EA is going to have to do something to improve their image in the next few years before whatever Battlefront game they make next comes out. The game will be entering its first multiplayer season next week on December 18 to match up with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which adds two new maps, two new heroes, and more.
