In the video game industry, there are a million ways to advertise a title, as is in every industry nowadays. There are classic ways and weird ones and there are others that are so “spot on” that we can’t even be mad with the fact that they needn’t exist. Such unique advertisement is the launch of a cereal brand named Super Mario Cereal, clearly aiming for the promotion of Super Mario Odyssey.
Super Mario Cereal, which is the product of a partnership between Nintendo and Kelloggs, is standard sugary cereal with marshmallows in the shape of iconic Super Mario items like a 1-up mushroom and Cappy. What’s more interesting though, is the fact that the box can be used as an Amiibo that can interact with Super Mario Odyssey by tapping them on the console.
The Amiibo reward is not anything exclusive or super rare, just gold coins or a heart in the game, but nonetheless its good to know that a box of cereal can help you progress your game.
According to Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives on Nintendo Blog:
“This powered-up partnership with Kellogg’s is another exciting way for us to expand the Nintendo brand in unique and creative ways. We are always looking for new opportunities to bring smiles to people of all ages, and this is a fun way to kick off the day.”
Brad Schwan, Senior Director of Morning Foods Marketing also stated his vies on Super Mario Cereal:
“We are thrilled to pack so much fun into one box of cereal. The package adds value and excitement for fans, with marshmallow shapes in the cereal inspired by Super Mario power-ups to tie the theme together.”
The limited-edition cereal box will begin hitting store shelves across the U.S. as early as Dec. 11 and those playing the Super Mario Odyssey game can tap the cereal box on the Nintendo Switch system to retrieve gold coins and hearts.
