Tomb Raider Has Sold Almost Twice As Many Copies Than Rise Of The Tomb Raider
There’s no secret in Square Enix’s state right now when it comes to its biggest IP’s. The company has suffered a lot of losses and mediocre releases the past years, resulting in its name being almost forgotten from the video game charts. Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda recently talked about the company and what rebooting the Tomb Raider saga meant for them, during an interview with gamesindustry.biz.
Square Enix’s president revealed that they see Tomb Raider as one of most important IP for the company in the market but its success was not at the scale they expected. According to statistics, Tomb Raider 2013 has sold more than 11 million units worldwide with 3.5 million copies in its first month of release. The most interesting thing here is that almost 50% of those sales are coming from PC sales, and specifically on Steam as SteamSpy’s data reveal.
On the other hand, the 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider has managed to sell around 7 million units and it wasn’t even available on PlayStation 4 for its first year. Square Enix’s last addition to the Tomb Raider story, Rise of the Tomb Raider failed to reach the expectations of Square Enix.
Matsuda admitted that the company counted on the first title for big numbers, something that was a bit far-fetched as he sees it now:
“The fiscal year prior to the one where I became president [in 2013] was one where overall our earning numbers were not very good. It was immediately before the end of that fiscal year, in March, that Tomb Raider came out so we had very high expectations for that. Looking back on that now, I think the target we set for ourselves was extremely high.”
However, both Tomb Raider titles seem to be doing just fine on both sales and reviews on consoles and PC since their release and bringing income to Square Enix even after so many years.
In related news, Matsuda also talked about Hitman and he revealed that he loves the franchise and wanted IO Interactive to continue developing the game but since they couldn’t invest any more resources on it, they decided to let them work with another partner.
Don’t forget that Square Enix is also about to announce Shadow of The Tomb Raider in the near future, which was expected to be at E3 2017 but they pushed its announcement further into 2017.
