The card-collecting community has a lot to look forward to next month when Hearthstone receives its new expansion pack called Kobolds and Catacombs, Blizzard announced at BlizzCon 2017.
According to game director Ben Brode, the new content will bring more than just a batch of brand new cards. There are treasure vaults involved, tasking everyone to don their explorer hats and familiarize themselves with the candle-flinging rat creatures.
Kobolds and Catacombs will introduce a new single-player mode called “Dungeon Run” that is unlike anything that the developer has done in the past for the free-to-play game. Players must defeat eight random bosses out of nearly fifty possible encounters, while collecting loot along the way to reinforce their decks for the fight ahead. Getting taken down by a boss means that the player must lose all loot and start from the very beginning.
Blizzard pointed out a new keyword as well called Recruit. Such cards will pull a minion from your deck and put it directly into play on the board. In addition, the expansion will give each playable class a legendary weapon. For example, Priest is getting “Dragon Soul” that can summon a 5/5 dragon every time the player casts three spells.
“It’s essentially a Hearthstone roguelike,” Brode said. “And it’s our most replayable single-player content ever. And also, it’s totally free.”
Players can receive one card from the expansion pack, Marin the Fox, for free by logging in on November 6. Joining the game after the expansion pack releases will also net players a free random legendary weapon card.
Kobolds and Catacombs is scheduled to launch in December and will be the final part of the Year of the Mammoth. A more precise release date will be mentioned in the weeks to come.
The expansion pack was actually leaked a month back when the French voice actor for the Innkeeper teased that he was working on an unknown card that feature a Kobold figure with a backpack and a pickaxe.
