Ghost of Tsushima Is The New IP From Sucker Punch, 3.5 Years in Development Already

If you watched Sony’s conference today at Paris Games Week, then you probably found yourself wondering when the new exclusive trailers were shown: “What is this beautiful Asian-themed trailer about? Onimusha? A new Dynasty Warriors title?”. That stunning trailer however turned out to be the new open-world action game called Ghost of Tsushima from Sucker Punch Studios. The game is an exclusive title for PlayStation 4 and is set in the 13th century in Japan.

In this trailer, which is set in Tsushima in Japan, we can see some graphically perfect scenes from Japan everyday life building up to a scene where the narrator asks the protagonist if he surrenders. The main character then emerges through the flames possibly for one more battle. Sucker Punch has also confirmed that the footage was all in-engine and not just cinematic CGI.

While we get almost no information about what Ghost of Tsushima is about from this trailer, Sony has released a description for it:

The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan — until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But, honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting — the way of the Ghost — as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.

Just looking at its name and description, Ghost of Tsushima seems to be a stealth action game. We wouldn’t be surprised if it had hack-n-slash elements as expected from any Asian-themed action title. Given the trailer, we could also say that the protagonist may have some superhuman abilities as well. These are all speculations though depending on what we see, so we must wait for more information by Sony.

In a an interview on Playstation’s Youtube Channel, Sucker Punch revealed that they were working on Ghost of Tsushima for 3.5 years, since the end of Infamous: Second Son’s development. The developers say that their aim with Ghost of Tsushima was to let the players experience what it means to be a Samurai in medieval Japan.

Sucker Punch Productions was an American independent video game developer company until August 2011 working exclusively with Sony Interactive Entertainment since 2000. Sony acquired Sucker Punch on August 2, 2011. The studio is widely known for their Infamous franchise with 5 major titles: Infamous, Infamous 2, Infamous: Festival of Blood, Infamous: Second Son and Infamous: First Light.
