It’s been many years since the last time we saw a new Rayman video game. Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch as a remaster of the 2005 title Rayman Legends marks the last time we’ve seen hime, it seems though that its developer team still has hope that their favorite hero will come back eventually in the form of Rayman 4 maybe.
Ubisoft designer Michel Ancel, who has previously worked as a director on Rayman’s first title, Rayman Origins, and Rayman Legends, seems to be dreaming about a fourth addition to the Rayman franchise, openly asking fans to “not let heroes die”. While he is currently working on Wild and Beyond Good & Evil 2, Ancel wants to bring back Rayman for a fourth adventure, obviously not a spinoff title this time.
Fans have been secretly longing for a the classic character to comeback for quite some time. Seeing all these childhood heroes like Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario getting new titles, with 3D graphics and new stories have been one more reason for fans to want their hero back. Just imagine what could Ubisoft do to the franchise with the engines currently in use and the hype fans have for such projects, it would really be a successful one.
Rayman 4 was, in fact, an actual project (not by Ubisoft Montpellier this time) which began in 2005 but was finally canceled, leaving us with some concept art pictures to keep us haunted about its potential existence. Plot-wise the game seems to be following the hero in a training camp for video game heroes where he could interact with other Ubisoft characters including The Prince of Persia’s titular character and Jade of Beyond Good & Evil. Maybe after Beyond Good & Evil 2’s release, Ancel will make this project come to life, making our childhood hero shine once again.
Could the legnedary character be back? After it’s cancellation, Michael Ancel worked as a director for Rayman Saving Rabbids so it’s not a surprise that this project was “forgotten” until now.
For now, Michael Ancel is working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 which will be available on all major platforms including XBOX One, PS4 and PC. An official release date is still not stated.
