GameStop’s Tone Deaf Assassin’s Creed Origins Pre Order Ad Causing Backlash
GameStop as a retailer doesn’t have the best of reputations and the latest Assassin’s Creed Origins Pre Order ad is not doing any favors to its reputation. The tone-deaf ad jokes about poor pre-order tactics. The animated Assassin’s Creed Origins ad shows a few visuals before being interrupted by a confused camel alongside the following message.
Sorry. The Bonus Mission Is Blocked. Unless you pre-order Assassin’s Creed Origins.
Framing bonus content in such a way to increase sales is controversial and not done in the best of tastes. Normally, extra content is presented as a reward for preordering even though it often doesn’t feel that way. The ad is not much different from a block banner that appears when you visit publications with paywalls.
2017 has been an odd year and it seems things are taking a turn for the worst with every passing week. Publishers are using the shadiest preorder incentives and microtransactions we have ever seen. The biggest example is Star Wars Battlefront 2 which is the first $60 game with a free to play monetization model.
Meanwhile, WB’s Shadow of War is deliberately hiding its true ending behind loot boxes to force players to pay. Shadow of War endgame content is a tedious 40-50 hours grind. Most reviews don’t mention this, similar to how they skipped over NBA 2K18’s scam, but the problem is there. The design may appeal to obsessed completionists but regular players may just prefer giving up or head to YouTube to see the true ending.
It is hard to imagine where things will be if the community doesn’t stand up.
As far as Assassin’s Creed Origins goes, we doubt Ubisoft had anything to do with this animated ad as it doesn’t make its game look good. Someone from GameStop messed up here.
