It has been just over two weeks since Fortnite received its new Battle Royale mode and the response has so far has been stunning.
In a new infographic, the developer revealed that more than 10 million players have tried out the Battle Royale mode so far. The figure is apparently the same as the entire population of Sweden. 44.5 million hours were logged by players during this time. Nearly 59 million traps were found, 798 million structures (walls, stairs, floors, ceilings) were built, and almost 7 million umbrellas earned.
Fortnite passed 7 million players last week, meaning that an additional 3 million were added since then. It recently registered more than 500,000 concurrent players across all platforms, another great achievement for the cooperative sandbox survival game. However, the peak activity pales in comparison to the fact that Fortnite brought over a million players when it first launched.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) is being largely credited for the sudden popularity surge in the battle royale genre. Fortnite is raking in that attention by giving players an alternative option. One advantage it has over PUBG is that it is already available on consoles and the numbers are likely to increase in the coming months.
Bluehole, on the other hand, is looking to escape early access on Steam later this year. An Xbox One version has been promised to arrive by then, with a PlayStation 4 version speculated for next year. We will have to see if it finds trouble getting traction on consoles provided that Fortnite is able to get a strong foothold.
