Augmented reality market is quickly gaining ground. While VR has not got the growth we expected analysts claim that the VR market is still growing and will continue to do so. There are companies that are skipping VR in favor of AR and there might be some solid reasons behind this. Market research firm IDC claims that augmented reality market is going to skyrocket.
According to the research, the combined number of AR and VR headsets sold by the end of the year will be 13.7 million units and that number will increase to 81.2 million by 2021. This is a compound growth of 56.1%. This is very impressive keeping in mind that the technology is relatively new and the cost for entry is pretty high.
Up till 2019, 9 out of 10 units sold will be VR headsets but AR is going to pick up the pace soon. This is good news for Microsoft and the partners that have announced their AR headsets that are relatively cheaper than what we already have on the market. According to Jitesh Ubrani senior research analyst for IDC Mobile Device Trackers:
“AR headset shipments today are a fraction of where we expect them to be in the next five years, both in terms of volume and functionality,”
The numbers are expected to increase soon and the increase will be rapid as the cost of entry will be decreased due to the help of new technology and manufacturing processes. Ubrani further went on to say that:
“AR headsets are also on track to account for over $30 billion in revenue by 2021, almost twice that of VR, as most of the AR headsets will carry much higher average selling prices with earlier adopters being the commercial segment.”
