A rare bug has been discovered in Overwatch that currently plagues the ranked queues and may end up permanently banning players for no rhyme or reason.
According to a recent thread on Reddit, several players were shocked to discover that their Skill Rating (SR) had dropped by hundreds. The highest loss is reportedly around 600 SR, leaving others ranging between 250 and 500 SR. Most of them also ended up receiving temporary bans, with a few being permanently banned for the entire season.
It has not been verified as to how the bug actually works in Overwatch but many speculate that it has do with a player leaving a competitive match just as soon as it begins to load. The system gets locked in a loop as it tries to fill in the empty slot. Every time it cycles in wait for players on a frozen screen, the player in question who left at the beginning loses precious ranked points. Since the system fails to proceed any further, the continuous loss of points can end up in the hundreds.
Blizzard is currently looking into the bug. While it has yet to identify the root cause, the affected players have had their bans removed and ranked points restored.
“This bug is a high priority for our team, and we’re working on a fix to prevent further instances of it occurring as we speak,” game director Jeff Kaplan announced on the official forums. “we’ll continue to monitor for additional occurrences and provide assistance until we can implement a permanent fix.”
An estimated timeline was not shared for the promised fix but it should arrive soon.
Last week, Blizzard announced a severe punishment in order to reduce toxicity levels and other unruly behavior in the game. Any player that earns three or more seasonal bans while playing ranked games will be permanently banned from ever entering the ranked queues of Competitive Play again.
