There have been a lot of rumors and hype surrounding the Razer mobile gaming device and we first talked about it back in January. Back then Razer had just acquired Nextbit and there was little that we knew about the companies plans with the new resources that it had bought but we had a hunch that it would be a mobile gaming device seeing how Nextbit is indeed a mobile company.
We touched on the matter again when an IPO was filed, providing more evidence for the existence of a Razer mobile gaming device. Now Razer CEO has confirmed that there is indeed a Razer mobile gaming device in the works and that a 2017 launch is to be expected.
It is important to note here that Min-Liang Tan, CEO and co-founder of Razer did not use the term smartphone and it is possible that the Razer mobile gaming device is not a smartphone but more of a Nintendo Switch competitor instead. Whatever the case may be, I am sure that this time it will be better than a couple of buttons added to a tablet.
According to Tan:
“One of the most hotly rumored things about Razer is that we’re coming up with a mobile device and I can say that we are coming up with a mobile device specifically geared toward gamers and entertainment.”
Seeing how the smartphone market is already very competitive and there is room for a gaming hand-held device in the market it is more than likely that the upcoming Razer mobile gaming device will be a Nintendo Switch competitor. Tan also talked about a 2017 release so we could see what Razer has to offer before the end of the year if things go as planned.
The company is planning to use funds from an upcoming IPO in order to fund the venture:
“We would love to have that war chest to allow us to invest in R&D… Having that war chest from the IPO would allow us to do all that and much more. And that’s what we want to continue doing: to make cool products.”
Let us know what you think about the upcoming Razer mobile gaming device and whether or not this is something that you would be interested in buying.
