Battleborn, often brought up as the poster child for failures, will no longer by receiving any kind of content support from next year.

“As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update,” creative director Randy Varnell stated in an open letter over the weekend. “Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on.”

This does not mean that Gearbox Software is shutting down the servers. Battleborn will continue to run its course for the “foreseeable future” and those who have been loyal have less to worry. However, the decision to end content support really makes it only a matter of time before the servers are finally killed due to low activity.

“I’ve been working on Battleborn nearly exclusively since 2012, and in some ways, that work stretches back to 2009 for me,” Varnell said. “Also, I want to personally thank you for giving Battleborn a chance, and dipping down into a new universe with us. We make games for you. And many of you have shared with us how much Battleborn has meant to you personally.”

The Fall Update for the game was announced recently at PAX West and will feature new Borderlands-themed skins, updated title art, a few Finisher Boosts and Taunts for the players. In addition, there will be minor balance changes to send the game off.

The entire workforce is being pulled away to work on a “highly anticipated” project that is undoubtedly the new Borderlands game. The extra hands should make work quicker, meaning that Gearbox Software might have the opportunity to officially announce the installment soon.

Battleborn was launched in May 2016 as an ambitious online first-person shooter but was quickly overshadowed by the arrival of Overwatch within the same month. While both were from the same genre, Gearbox Software could not simply find its place against the magic of Blizzard. Overwatch featured better lore, more interesting characters, among several improvements. Battleborn forcefully went free-to-play after a couple of months but it barely helped gain traction.

Battleborn may have died soon after its launch, but there is a new game in town that is performing even worse. LawBreakers is basically the new Battleborn unless it finds a way back.
