See Who The Outsider Is in Dishonored: Death of the Outsider

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is a standalone expansion pack released as a sequel for Dishonored 2 releasing in 2 days and to keep things fresh Bethesda has revealed a video explaining a bit more about its main antagonist, the Outsider.

In the video, set on Bethesda Live Stage, Harvey Smith the creative director of Arkane Studios has talked a bit more about the character of the Outsider and explained what his death in the expansion could mean to the game and why is he so loved by the community.

So who is the Outsider? As the wiki page of Dishonored states:

The Outsider is a mysterious morally ambiguous supernatural being, neither good nor evil. He usually appears to people of interest as a plain-looking young man with short brown hair and black eyes, wearing a brown coat, blue pants and black boots.

Though many people worship him, such is considered heresy by the Abbey of the Everyman and punishable by extreme measures, including death. Created to be the Void’s representational figure, he appears to be the source of all magic in the world of the Dishonored franchise, and his shrines can be found across the Isles.

In Dishonored: Death of the Outsider the main protagonists, Daud and Billie Lurk, have the ultimate quest. Kill the Outsider and end the chaos he had caused with his supernatural powers. What does his death mean for the game though?

As we’ve seen the powers of the protagonists in all Dishonored games are given by the Outsider. He never tells them how to use them but instead he sits back and watch. Could you blame the chaos spread by the player on him? Probably because without him you would not have the power to do so, and thats the reason the Outsider is set to die in this new expansion.

Killing the Outsider means a world without supernatural powers (at least supernatural powers provided by him) so without his guidance the player is set to fight with his own power and that would probably end the franchise right there. As Smith states Dishonored always gives a choice to the player on whether to kill or not, so if that’s stated on this video then you probably have a choice here too. If the death of this character is innevitable and whether this concludes the Disohonored franchise is not yet clear.

The Outsider is much loved by the community though. Smith says that the character has a lot of mystery to him and noone knows what his motives are. Marking his words:

“He’s not an evil figure but it’s hard to see him as a good figure. He’s not a trickster, he’s very earnest actually, sometimes he’s ironic. I think he suffered a lot and that’s one of the reasons they’re endeared to him.”

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider is set to be released on September 15th for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
