The tremendous success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is no secret. The game has sold millions of copies but is still going strong. However, Brendan Greene never expected PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds sales to blow the roof off the way it has. Speaking in a recent interview, Greene stated that everyone at the studio agreed that PUBGs would sell 200,00 to 300,000 copies in its first year. But that first million brought smiles on a lot of faces at the studio, and rightfully so.
Battlegrounds sold 2 million copies in the first five weeks and have since crossed Dota 2 in terms of concurrent users. Developers release weekly and monthly updates for the $30 game and they have promised to keep the price at $30 at full release.
A lot of the [internal team], they really couldn’t believe it. There were a few veterans of the game industry that were [saying], like, ‘No, no. 200,000 [or] 300,000 the first year.’ But then when we hit that first million, there were a lot of smiles around the office.
Battlegrounds is a Battle Royale that pits 100 players against each other. It is biting into the player base of some popular games such as DOTA 2, League of Legends, and Counter Strike. Content support is exceptional and this month developers are introducing a new weapon as well as a town to the Island. PlayerUnknown is also working with Rare for its water tech.
Battlegrounds is now available on PC and is coming to Xbox One X soon. There are no words regarding a PS4 version for the time being.
