Fans of Batman’s eternal nemesis, Joker, might be in for a treat as it seems like Warner Bros. is planning to create a Joker spinoff movie which might not be set in the same DC Cinematic Universe as Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.
This will be the first film under a new banner that has yet to be named in which WB can expand the canon of DC properties and create unique storylines with different actors playing the iconic characters,
While not a whole lot of details about the film are known as of yet, according to Deadline, the Joker spinoff movie will be directed by Todd Phillips who is well known for directing The Hangover. The movie’s script will be a collaboration between Phillips and 8 Mile’s Scott Silver while the legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese will be producing the Joker spinoff.
As the movie seems to be set in a different universe, Jared Leto who currently plays the role of Joker in the DCEU will not be reprising his role for this spinoff. It is unclear who Warner Bros. might pick up as the new actor to take on the iconic villain but a lot of moviegoers would agree that Leto was not the ideal choice to play the role.
However, this doesn’t mean the end of Leto’s career as the Joker since he is still set to play the character in Suicide Squad sequel and Harley Quinn spinoff.
From what is known so far about the Joker spinoff movie, it is going to be a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in the early 80s Gotham City. Whether the timeline means a very young Joker who is just starting out in a life of crime or not remains to be seen. It is also unlikely that we will see Batman in this movie as it will most probably focus on Joker’s rise to infamy.
