Following several hints unearthed by data miners in the past week, Blizzard has officially announced Junkertown as a new escort map for Overwatch.
It is set in the harsh and unforgiving Australian Outback. According to lore, the lands once held a giant omnium factory that was destroyed to turn the terrain into an irradiated wasteland. Junkertown is now home to a band of lawless scavengers that is led by an evil queen.
“When they aren’t pillaging the omnium’s skeleton for anything of value, the Junkers blow off steam in the Scrapyard—a massive gladiatorial arena whose combatants fight for glory, riches…and to survive,” noted the developer.
Junkertown centers around Roadhog and Junkrat, both of whom were kicked out for their shenanigans. However, the duo now has a plan to get back in. The payload being pushed is full of gold and jewels. Unknown to many, though, a ton of explosives have been wired underneath. The goal is simple, push the payload close enough to the queen and make it explode.
Blizzard has promised to release a new cinematic short tomorrow, which should give us more details on the new map.
Junkertown is not the only new map heading to Overwatch. Last week, Blizzard announced Château Guillard for the new Team Deathmatch mode. It is the “ancestral home” of Widowmaker and carries little details from her earlier life.
