With Gamescom around, EA has given us some gameplay about its Battlefront 2 Starfighter Assault mode, showing off what it’s like playing the new space-battles mode, a mode long missed from the first DICE Battlefront game. The mode supports up to 24 players in all three eras.
Starfighter Assault’s gameplay seems to focus around a three-stage battle, where players in the Prequel, Original Trilogy, and Sequel eras engage in battle in the Clone Wars, Galactic Civil War, or the fight against the First Order. To start, players must destroy the outer defenses on a dockyard, then bring down its shields, then finally destroy the large ship that’s docked there.
The mode that we saw in the Gamescom demo for the Battlefront 2 Starfighter Assault mode took place in the Original Trilogy era, but included not only heroes like Han Solo in the Millennium Falcon and Boba Fett in the Slave I, but also Darth Maul in his Scimitar, and Poe Dameron in his Black One X-wing.
We also got a new class of starfighter than the X-wing and A-wing (or TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor) for the mode, the bomber, which in terms of the Rebel Alliance and Empire are the Y-wing starfighter and the TIE Bomber, both of which are great for attacking defenses and can take out and give a lot of punishment.
The mode also looked pretty fun, and much more like a space battle than the previous space battle segments that had been in the previous Star Wars: Battlefront game, which instead of being their own game mode were part of a larger map. It’s also better than Battlefront 1’s Fighter Squadron gameplay.
