Microsoft has officially announced Age of Empires IV as the latest entry in the real-time strategy franchise, more than a decade after the last installment.
It is finally time to battle through history once more. A launch trailer released by the company during a livestream at Gamescom 2017 shows a range of battles for domination and survival across kingdoms of different ages. There is the classical period of Greece, Renaissance of Europe, colonialism of America, relished empire of Rome, and even samurais from Japan.
Age of Empires IV is in development for PC by Relic Entertainment. The studio is known for its exemplary work on Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes. Fans who have been waiting all this time for the fourth installment can rest easy as the game is in good hands.
“We can’t wait to tap into our strengths as a studio to fuse historical context with deep strategic gameplay, and to bring this franchise back to the forefront of gaming and into the hands of its beloved community,” stated Relic Entertainment on its official website.
The developer has promised to release more information in the coming months. A release date has not been announced but we can hope that it is somewhere in the next year.
Elsewhere, Microsoft also announced that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition will be released on October 19. It will be available exclusively on Windows 10 in the Windows Store. Age of Empires II and Age of Empires III are also receiving Definitive Editions in the future.
