Deep Silver has successfully signed up to act as the global publisher for the long-awaited Shenmue III installment.
The official announcement confirms that the deal will cover both the physical and digital versions of the game on PlayStation 4 and PC. In addition, a release date is scheduled to take place sometime in the second half of next year.
“I am very pleased to secure this global partnership with Deep Silver, which is comprised of incredible men and women who have a deep passion for bringing Japanese titles to the rest of the world,” said game director Yu Suzuki. “Throughout this process, Deep Silver has expressed a deep passion for Japanese games, the Shenmue franchise, and its fans–this gives me further confidence in Shenmue III and that we have found the best partner possible.”
Deep Silver has previously been behind the distribution of several games such as Saints Row IV, Dead Island, Homefront: The Revolution, and more. It is an honor for the company to handle the publishing duty for a highly anticipated game, one that many thought would never see the light of day.
Shenmue III was revealed by Sony during its press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2015) in the form of a crowd-funding project. At the time there was some confusion as to whether or not Sony would be publishing the game. Developer Ys Net clarified soon after that Sony would only be providing “assistance on the production and marketing end” as well as “some support” in publishing.
The crowd-funding campaign was launched for Shenmue III on Kickstarter with a goal of $2 million. Nearly 70,000 backers showed support by pledging just over $6 million. Since then, the game has raised even more funds for its development.
We might hear more about Shenmue III at Gamescom 2017 next week.
