Ubisoft Goes Into Detail About Creating The Assassin’s Creed Origins Protagonist
Assassin’s Creed Origins is going to be different from previous Assassin’s Creed games in a lot of ways, not just with how combat and traversal works but also with characters. Ubisoft showed us this in how they came up with Bayek, the Assassin’s Creed Origins protagonist that we’ll be playing as.
According to the Ubisoft devs, Bayek is very different from a regular Assassin’s Creed protagonist, being more like Altair than the previous protagonists. Bayek is a grizzled, veteran Medjay, unlike the protagonists of the other Assassin’s Creed games since Assassin’s Creed 2, who have all been young people that are coming into the world on their own and discovering life.
As a Medjay, Bayek is part of a sacred order with a holy calling to both protect the Pharoah and dispense justice for the people as an order of lawkeepers and judges, and as such Bayek holds a very traditionalist stance towards the way the world works.
We’ve seen this in previous gameplay that showed us how the Assassin’s Creed Origins protagonist worked, when he dispatched a group of bandits that were forcing children to help them steal things by threatening their dog. We’ll likely see many side-missions revolving around that for Bayek, with him fighting bandits and taking on injustice wherever he finds it.
The huge amount of training that goes into being a Medjay is the reason that Bayek can use so many different weapons, including spears, swords, bows, clubs, axes, and more.
Bayek, as the Assassin’s Creed Origins protagonist, will be taking us on his own adventure that shows us how the modern interpretation of the Assassin brotherhood, the version that we’ve been with since the original game, got its start.
