There is a small chance that the 2024 Olympics will feature esports as part of its programme, complete with medals and eternal glory for the victors.
We have all seen the world of competitive gaming thrive in the past years. The success has attracted a number of non-endemic brands in several popular multiplayer games. Watching it being included in the Olympics will be the icing on a beautiful cake, provided that it happens.
Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic bid committee, has announced that he is willing to hold talks with The International Olympic Committee and esports representatives about the possibility of video games joining the ranks of the 2024 Olympics. He added that his committee recognizes the value of esports as it is what the next generation is interested in. It is now time for others to do the same.
“We have to look at it because we can’t say, ‘It’s not us. It’s not about Olympics,’” he told The Associated Press. “The youth, yes they are interested in eSport and this kind of thing. Let’s look at it. Let’s meet them. Let’s try if we can find some bridges.
There is still plenty of time to talk around a table. The fact that esports will be present at the Asian Games is likely to hold the torch for its inclusion in the 2024 Olympics. At least the Olympic Council of Asia will be glad to push the Paris Olympic bid committee to see the light.
The International Olympic Committee will be gathering in Lima, Peru, next month to officially confirm Paris as the host for the 2024 Olympics. Los Angeles will have the honor of acting host for the next iteration of the global sporting event.
