The last major update for Overwatch has not been kind to Roadhog. The scrapper has fallen off the competitive charts in terms of popularity and success. This has to do with a new batch of changes that remove his capability to instantly hook and eliminate targets without receiving much damage in return.
Following several complaints from players, Blizzard has confirmed that it is currently considering a few upgrades to Roadhog to better his situation. According to principal designer Geoff Goodman, the Public Test Region (PTR) will soon be updated to include a few defensive buffs for the hero.
“We have been play testing Roadhog with -50% damage taken while using Take a Breather, and also allowing him to move at full speed while inhaling,” he wrote on the official forums. “These two changes combined certainly make him significantly more difficult to kill, while also allowing Roadhog players to be much more aggressive when trying to find a hook target, knowing they can survive a lot more easily.”
On the same note, the developer admitted that the defensive buffs may prove too strong for Roadhog. This should be ascertained when the changes go live for testing. Continuous feedback from the players will work to fine tune the hero before the changes are pushed live.
Less we forget, a similar damage reduction buff was a core ingredient with the overhauling of Bastion earlier this year. Despite Blizzard stating that it was balanced, the transforming hero was wreaking havoc for everyone on the live servers. Ultimately, the developer had to tone it down. Hence, this time around, Blizzard is walking cautiously.
Overwatch is scheduled to receive its next patch tomorrow, which will introduce Doomfist as the new playable character. Expect the PTR to be updated soon after with the proposed Roadhog upgrades as well as other changes.
