Microsoft and Xbox may have just tapped a new market by making Xbox the newest Real Madrid sponsor, making the console the club’s official gaming platform. This comes a few months after it was revealed that Playstation and Sony had gotten exclusive marketing rights to FIFA, but Xbox struck back.
As a Real Madrid sponsor, Xbox will be the club’s official console until the year 2019, the same way that EA has become the holder of image rights for the German Bundesliga for the next five years (screwing Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series out of a similar deal until 2021). However, the rest of the details about the deal are unknown.
What we do know, however, is that when Real Madrid goes on an international tour and arrives in the US, they’ll be participating in various game jam events like Minecraft, and playing in live FIFA 18 tournaments to help promote the upcoming FIFA 18 game that will be releasing at the tail end of September.
A similar promotion was done when the Doom reboot came out last year, where various American football players teamed up with a number of different internet personalities to promote the Doom multiplayer mode (which despite being in one of the best games of that year was one of the most criticized aspects).
Real Madrid is one of the many different teams and football clubs that will be featured in FIFA 18, and is one of the most well-known worldwide. The fact that it’s also the team of Cristiano Ronaldo, the player who’s been the face of marketing for the upcoming soccer game, is likely also a factor in their tour and Xbox’s decision to be a Real Madrid sponsor through their console.
We’ll likely get some streaming content about the FIFA 18 live tournaments sometime in the future, but for now the FIFA fan base will have to be on the lookout for more content from Microsoft and Real Madrid before FIFA 18 releases on September 29.
