As if reaching $7 million in three days wasn’t enough, Dota 2 The International 7 now has a prize pool of more than $20 million and it is still continuing to grow. Dota 2’s massive prize pools aren’t exactly a surprise now since The International has been one of the highest rewarding Sports tournament (including eSports and normal like Tennis, Racing and others) for a number of years now but this year it seems The International 7 will be setting some new records.
According to the official Dota 2 website, the prize pool for the tournament is now above $21 million, $21,512,420 to be exact which is higher than last year’s record breaking $20,770,460. What is even more surprising in the case of Dota 2 prize pool is that every year, Valve only puts forth $1.6 million and the rest of the money is raised by the passionate Dota 2 community.
Whenever The International is announced, Valve allows Dota 2 players to purchase BattlePass and points, the money from these sales goes towards the prize pool. In exchange for these purchases, players get unique and cool looking cosmetic items for their in-game heroes. Players level up their BattlePass by purchasing points or playing games, the higher their pass, the better items they get in-game so there is always an incentive to spend more money buying points.
The International 7 itself is set to begin on 2nd August where the winning team will take away this prize pool, making its members millionaires over a weekend. Not only is it a great sight to see your favorite players take away the prize money it also shows there is a future for eSports despite what the games might be perceived as in general public.
Since there are still a few weeks left till the Dota 2 The International 7 starts, the prize pool will undoubtedly grow and might even get close to $25 million.
