Intel Coffee Lake-S CPUs Will Not Be Compatible With LGA 1151 Socket? i3 CPUs Might Not Feature Hyperthreading
Intel Coffee Lake-S CPUs will be the 8th generation of mainstream processors that will be hitting the market sometime later this year. While there is little that we know about these processors, reports are coming in regarding Intel Coffee Lake-S CPUs that seem legit. Here is what you need to know about the rumors surrounding these CPUs.
For a long time, Intel CPUs have been limited to 4 cores, at least for the mainstream market. You had to pay a lot for additional 2 cores but that could change with the upcoming Intel Coffee Lake-S CPUs. Ryzen is a huge threat to Intel and we might see 6 core CPUs hitting the mainstream market this year. Kaby Lake uses the LGA 1551 socket but that might not be the case with Coffee Lake.
Reports claim that these upcoming CPUs will not be compatible with the current socket type and it is possible that the new CPUs will support a new socket type that could be LGA 1151 v2. This has not been confirmed at this point so do take this information with a grain of salt. While the additional 2 cores would be appreciated, I do not think a new socket would be taken in the same way.
This means that it is possible that you might need to upgrade your motherboard when you switch to Intel Coffee Lake-S. While this might make sense for people that are using 3rd or 4th generation CPUs, this might not be worth it for people are already using Kaby Lake or Skylake CPUs. The performance advantage of Coffee Lake-S is yet to be seen.
There are other reports that claim that the upcoming i3 CPUs will not feature hyperthreading and will come with 4 physical cores. You might ask why one would buy a Core i5 if you are getting 4 cores with the i3. According to reports, the Core i5 CPUs will feature 4 cores and 4 threads, so that would make sense.
