God of War for the Playstation 4 is going to be a bit of a departure when it comes to sympathizing with Kratos. We’ll be seeing how his character has evolved since the original games, and Cory Barlog of Sony Santa Monica even told us a bit about Kratos’s beard.
Mainly, that it smells like pine and dead trolls. Considering his surroundings, however, that’s not really that surprising. God of War for the Playstation 4 will be taking place in a Norse-inspired area of the world, and the Norse gods may be the antagonists of the game.
Kratos’s design has also been drastically changed for the game, and Kratos’s beard isn’t the only part of the character. Kratos’s outfit has drastically changed, with a different outfit that’s more fitting with the setting. Kratos’s personality, where he’s attempting to reign in his temper and trying to be a good father to his young son Atreus, has also undergone a change.
In the previous God of War games, Kratos was brutal and violent, constantly angry, and blamed everyone except himself for his character flaws, whether it was Ares, Zeus, or the other Greek gods (you know you screwed up when even your wife calls you out). Hopefully we’ll see more of this character development over the course of the new God of War games.
Kratos’s beard can also be seen as being indicative of how far the series has come; previous God of War games had Kratos as bald and essentially hairless, and the fact that the game not only looks this good but also has Kratos wearing a beard (that even waves in the wind!) can be a testament to how far the series has come with this new technology.
God of War will be coming out sometime late next year for the Playstation 4 and Playstation 4 Pro.
