When the Original Xbox came out, Halo was the main system seller and the console did well. It might not have done well as compared to the competition but it did decently on its own. Games like Halo and Project Gotham were enough to keep you hooked for months. It is possible that we might be getting an original Xbox emulator for PC soon.
After the original Xbox, the Xbox 360 got a lot of attention followed by the Xbox One and Xbox One S. Now we have the Xbox One X that is capable of running games at 4K 60 FPS and that seems like a major step in the right direction looking at how Microsoft has built over the original Xbox.
You can learn more about the new Xbox One X here.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer talked to PC Gamer about the potential of an original Xbox emulator coming out for PC. He talked about why this is not an easy task but the possibility of one coming out is still here. According to Spencer:
“I want people to be able to play games! [Emulation] is hard. [Xbox] 360 specifically is a PowerPC chip, emulated to x86, which is difficult. It’s a little bit easier when you have a fixed spec, when you think about Xbox, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X. And you think of the variable specs of the PC space, so you’re taking a fixed-spec PowerPC emulator and then moving it over to run on PC, so there’s a lot of work there”
Spencer has been making some moves ever since he became the boss of Xbox. While there are decisions that people didn’t like (canceling Scalebound), I think we can all agree that under his leadership the brand has accomplished a lot in these few months. He further went on to say the following:
“The original Xbox, OG Xbox, is a little bit easier, because that was an x86 chip it was running on. Obviously when we think about UWP and the ability for games to run across console and PC, we’re getting closer. I want developers to be able to build portable applications, which is why we’ve been focusing on UWP for games and even apps that want to run on multiple devices. So I think we’ve got work to go do there, but I think it’s in our future”
So, one thing is for sure, there is a plan for an original Xbox emulator for PC soon. We do not know how soon but in the meanwhile you can play original Xbox games on the Xbox One X when it comes out.
