A new Middle-earth: Shadow of War trailer has been released by Monolith, and shows off a lot more stuff about the game’s story including new allies, new enemies, and more. While we didn’t get any real new gameplay, the game’s story appears to be getting much darker and more ambiguous.
Middle-earth: Shadow of War is the sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, an action game by Monolith that came out in 2014. Shadow of Mordor told the story of Talion, a Ranger of Gondor who is murdered by some of Sauron’s minions, but who is held between a state of life and death by the ghost of the elven smith Celebrimbor, who made the Rings of Power.
The Middle-earth: Shadow of War trailer shows a number of different characters as well; not just the Nazgul (who will feature heavily in the story as they try and take Talion’s ring) or Sauron, but also a mysterious woman who can turn into a spider (fans have guessed she may be Shelob, her mother Ungoliant, or some other spider-lady), a Ranger woman who threatens to kill Talion if he loses himself to his Ring, and more.
The story seems to point towards Talion and Celebrimbor slipping from their original purpose, their goals slowly mutating from “stop Sauron and free Middle-earth” to “Conquer Mordor for ourselves”, calling themselves the “Bright Lord”.
Apparently, in the Tolkein legendarium, any attempt to make a new Ring of Power strong enough to fight Sauron would simply result in another Sauron under a different name, and the Middle-earth: Shadow of War trailer seems to be pointing to Celebrimbor and Talion becoming that other Sauron-like figure.
Either way, we’ll have to see what happens in the story when Middle-earth: Shadow of War releases on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC on October 10.
