Now it seems that Nvidia and AMD are working on cryptocurrency mining GPUs.
Cryptocurrency trend is increasing demand of GPUs especially for AMD cards as they are increasingly popular with miners. Even though the new RX 500 series GPUs are out of stock but it is not the first time that this has happened. Back in 2013, miner grabbed any AMD GPU that they could get their hands on and this increased the demand for such GPUs.
Reports have confirmed that cryptocurrency mining is indeed increasing the demand for GPUs. AMD spokesperson has made it clear that the gaming market is the number one priority and according to this AMD representative:
The gaming market remains our priority. We are seeing solid demand for our Polaris-based offerings in the gaming and newly resurgent cryptocurrency mining markets based on the strong performance we are delivering.
Seeing how AMD is also entering the professional GPU market it would not be surprising that the company also takes an interest in this cryptocurrency market and introduces cryptocurrency mining GPUs as well. At the end of the day, AMD has the technology to make this happen and it needs all the revenue that it can get.
Reports claim that these cryptocurrency mining GPUs will not have display connectors and they you could just add them into your system and get to work. It also seems that these variants of the GPUs will also be a bit cheaper as compared to the traditional GPUs that we see coming out for the gaming market.
Cryptocurrency mining GPUs could be an interesting source of income for both AMD and Nvidia and seeing how the demand for these GPUs is driving up the price of mainstream GPUs we know that there is a market for these kinds of graphics cards.
