Tekken 7 is the first installment in the iconic fighting franchise to debut at the top spot in the retail charts of the United Kingdom in almost a decade.
It marched into the weekend with stellar reviews and is being hailed as one of the best installments in the series, as well as one of the best fighting games, in recent years. According to information provided by the UKIE (UK Interactive Entertainment), Tekken 7 is dominating the retail market of this week and is likely to continue doing the same in the next.
The last entry in the franchise to seize the top spot in the retail charts of the United Kingdom was Tekken 3, which was released in 1998 on the original PlayStation console. The most recent Tekken 6 installment, released in 2009, only managed to debut at eighth. Tekken Tag Tournament 2 came the closest in 2012 when it lost the first place to Sleep Dogs from Square Enix.
There is a pattern from recent years that signify the surging popularity of good fighting games. Mortal Kombat X dominated the charts of the United Kingdom when it released in 2015. Following that was the recent release of Injustice 2. NetherRealm Studios has clearly discovered the formula to success for its games. Bandai Namco has perhaps just learned with Tekken 7. Overall, it spells great news for the fighting game community. This is in perspective of the underwhelming response to Street Fighter V last year, a series with a household name but one that messed up.
With Tekken 7 pushing past everyone, Injustice 2 has fallen to third place. Between the two fighting games is Overwatch, which saw a significant increase in sales due to the ongoing Anniversary event as well as the announcement of a new, discounted, Game of the Year edition.
The top ten games from this week’s retail (physical) charts (via GamesIndustry) are the following for the aforementioned region:
- Tekken 7
- Injustice 2
- GTA 5
- FIFA 17
- Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Rocket League
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Which of the two brawlers would you suggest to your friends: Tekken 7 or Injustice 2?
