Sony’s VR headset, PSVR, launched last year and while apparently the sales of the headset might be lagging behind, but according to Sony, PlayStation VR sales are going as planned. Now a new report suggests that PSVR might be picking up in terms of sales.
According to the report from International Data Corporation, PSVR shipped over 400,000 units in the first quarter. To be exact Sony shipped 429,000 units for its first quarter. According to the report, total worldwide shipment of VR headsets and Augmented reality headsets reached 2.3 million units and 98% of this are the sales of VR headsets.
The report further predicts that “the amount of shipped AR and VR headsets will reach 99.4M units by 2021”. While Sony shipped over 400,000 units but was not the highest selling headset as Samsung’s Gear VR shipped 489,500 units worldwide.
With the sales performance picking up for PlayStation VR Sony has also geared up its efforts to release quality games for its virtual reality headset. Farpoint was the latest games to release for the VR headset that launched with great critical reception and God Of War developer, Sony Santa Monica Studio, is also working on something for PlayStation VR.
[Sony] Santa Monica are working on something big. It’s a full-blown 2nd wave title for [PlayStation VR]. It’ll be revealed soon and I know it’ll go well with the core PlayStation audience, but I can’t say any more than that!
However, that would not be the first time the studio would develop something VR related as the studio once prototyped the first-person God Of War PlayStation VR demo.
Head of PlayStation’s Magic Lab, Richard Marks, revealed that the division has been working with experimental tech for few years that led to the creation of PSVR and at the same time Sony Santa Monica Studio developed a first-person God Of War PSVR demo.
