Overwatch Loot Boxes May Be Changed to Address Duplicates and Other Issues

The celebration of the game’s first anniversary was put aside on the weekend when the community began frowning on the current state of Overwatch loot boxes.

A post on Reddit highlights three major gripes with the delivery of rewards and notes possible ways in which they can be addressed.

To begin with, event loot boxes guarantee only one event-related item. This is not feasible for those who spend real-world money to get hold of the new items and bypass grinding. Next is the bane of duplicates. If getting only one event-related item from a loot box wasn’t frustrating enough, more often players will receive duplicates. Hence, purchasing a hundred Overwatch loot boxes does not translate into a hundred items. There are bound to be a large number of duplicates. Finally, the currency accommodation from obtaining duplicate items is incredibly low. This is true for items even with high rarity values.

The thread caught sight of game director Jeff Kaplan, who assured that Blizzard is following fan-feedback on the current rewards system. In fact, the developer held an internal meeting before the weekend began to discuss the very same matter.

“I just wanted to acknowledge that we’ve been following the threads about the loot box rewards as they pertain to the anniversary events, other events and loot boxes in general,” he wrote on the official forums. “The feedback and suggestions have been helpful to us. We had a really great discussion yesterday about the feedback we’ve been hearing this week. While I don’t have any immediate action items to report, I thought it was important for you to know that we are listening.”

Some of the suggestions by the community include changing Overwatch loot boxes to feature two guaranteed event-related items. In addition, the currency accommodation from duplicates items should be increased. Some have even stated that Blizzard should look into the new rewards system of Heroes of the Storm for more improvement ideas.

The ongoing Anniversary event brings eleven new legendary skins for players to choose from. It will continue running until June 12. How many have you unlocked so far?
