Blizzard is inviting everyone to be part of a special Overwatch Free Weekend event next week to celebrate the game’s first anniversary.
The entire roster of twenty-four heroes will be available in all fourteen maps across every game mode. Those who manage to level up their accounts will also be eligible for Competitive Play, which is normally restricted during such free periods.
Blizzard is opening up everything for its free weekend. This means that players can earn and unlock Loot Boxes for random rewards, as well as use a variety of different customization options for heroes.
Most importantly, any progress made will be transferred over if the player decides to purchase a copy after the Overwatch Free Weekend has concluded. This includes levels, cosmetic upgrades, and other rewards unlocked. Just note that the account needs to be the same or else the player will have to start from scratch.
The free weekend will commence from May 26 and last until May 29 across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Those interested should prepare by downloading and installing the official Blizzard application. Create an account, and wait until the event goes live next week to download the full version of the game.
Note that the free weekend will run alongside the anniversary event to celebrate the game’s first birthday. Participants will have access to the anniversary event as well, meaning that players will be able to unlock exclusive rewards. As to what kind of rewards, Blizzard should detail that in the coming days.
Elsewhere, Blizzard has confirmed the upcoming release of the previously leaked Overwatch: Game of the Year Edition. It will replace the current Overwatch: Origins Edition, offering content over the top that was previously only available to those who pre-ordered the game last year.
