The Witcher is a popular video game franchise and the success of The Witcher 3 shows it. Now Netflix has announced The Witcher series and the production of this series will soon start. The series will be inspired by The Witcher games series developed by polish developer CD Projekt Red.
Netflix has partnered with Polish production and visual effects studio Platige Image to bring The Witcher series to TV. That’s not all, Andrzej Sapkowski, the author of The Witcher novels will serve as creative consultant. The announcement was made by Platige Image, which describes the series as a drama and confirmed that it will be in English.
Andrzej Sapkowski has created a rich and memorable world, at once magical and familiar. We couldn’t be more excited about bringing [it to] Netflix members around the world.
Andrzej Sapkowski also expressed his excitement for the project saying “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing”.
Andrzej Sapkowski is very excited for the project, however, same can’t be said for The Witcher games. According to Sapkowski himself, he has nothing against the game industry and the benefits that CD Projekt Red is receiving from the game are well deserved, but the games began to spoil my market.
The belief, widely spread by CDPR, that the games made me popular outside of Poland is completely false. I made the games popular. All of my translations in the West—including the English one—were published before the first game.
