Developers at Rare have apparently spoken about the possibility of a cross platform Sea of Thieves, able to support players on both the Xbox One and the PC. Sea of Thieves is a pirate simulator that will be the first game Rare has made in a good while, and it looks amazing.
The developers have described the possibility of cross platform play as “simply amazing”, and considering that Sea of Thieves is one of the games that’s going to be on the Xbox One’s Play Anywhere program when the game launches, it seems like the first stage of that possibility is already underway.
Sea of Thieves, in addition to being a pirate simulator, allows you to go all over the game’s world with your friends, with all of you crewing a ship and exploring deserted islands to find treasure.
According to Joe Nate, the executive producer of the game, the reason that the cross platform Sea of Thieves gameplay was so amazing was because you couldn’t tell who was playing on an Xbox One, and who was playing on a PC.
Sea of Thieves is one of the more anticipated Xbox One titles, mainly because it’s one of the few actual exclusives the Xbox One has. Most of the games that have come out for it since its release have been multi-platform games, and there have been fairly few actual exclusive Xbox One games this console generation.
Sea of Thieves could go a long way to rectifying this situation, especially if many gamers look at it and are reminded of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, which won a lot of praise from gamers thanks to its sailing mechanics.
Hopefully Microsoft will also see it that way and allow cross platform Sea of Thieves, especially since it would only be between the Xbox One and the PC, rather than the Xbox One and the Playstation 4.
