Prey 2017 is a reboot of the classic first-person shooter developed by Human Head Studios and launched in 2006. Despite sharing the same name, the reboot is nothing like the original and reinvents the franchise in a horror-survival genre and Bethesda was so confident about Arkane’s new approach that it canceled Prey 2.
Prey 2017 is set in an open-ended environment aboard the Talos I, which is a space station orbiting the Earth. The game takes place in a near future where humans have made contact with an Alien life form, however, this life form is not friendly. Humans have been doing experiments to harness their ability to mimic but things go wrong and you are the only one who can save the Earth from being annihilated.
From a technical point of view, the game has quite a few issues on the PC despite Arkane Studios assuring that the PC version of Prey 2017 will not suffer on PC like Dishonored 2 did. Despite the promise the game is facing technical issues like crashing right after loading, random crashes stuck at the loading screen, not being able to change the FOV, D3D11 errors on Windows 7 and more. If you are facing issues with Prey 2017, then check out the following fixes which might be able to help you.
#1 Prey 2017 Lag and Stutter Fix
The fix to issue is very simple, all you have to do is open up the task manager while running the game and find “Prey.exe” and set the CPU priority to high, this will reduce the CPU usage by approximately 50% and the issue will most probably be resolved.
#2 Prey 2017 Random Crash Fix
PC players of Prey 2017 have been facing random crashes. The fix for these crashes is rather simple, try to fix your “virtual memory” to just a little more than the recommended value. For this, go to the system settings, then select advanced settings and change the paging file size.
Another fix for this issue is to verify your Steam game cache, as the crash might be happening due to a corrupt save file. Try to load the game from an autosave from the start of the mission. If the issue still persists then turn off “anti-aliasing” in the graphics settings and turn down the level of detail a bit.
#3 Prey 2017 Constantly Freezing In-Game
If you are facing random freezes while in-game then try these fixes. First of all, update your graphics driver to the latest version, if it still doesn’t work then trying rolling the drivers back to the driver version before the update or even before that. If the problem persists then try these:
- Disable triple buffering
- Turn off V-sync
- Cap the FPS at 120
- Set the game to windowed borderless mode
#4 Prey 2017 Infinite Loading Fix
The solution to this issue is very simple if you are using RTSS and Crimson to cap your frame rate then these are the reason why you are facing the infinite loading screen. Unlock your frame rate and your loading times will improve and use in-game frame rate cap if you still want to do it.
#5 Prey 2017 Change FOV Via Config File
To change your FOV in the game you will have to make some changes to the game’s config.ini file. You will find this file in the root folder in your Save Games folder i.e C: Users\your username\Saved Games\Arkane Studios\Prey.
Open up the Config.ini file and look for cl_hfov = 85.5656, the value can be replaced to up to 120.
#6 Can’t Install Prey 2017 Fix
If you are facing this issue then the solution is to move your installation folder. Close your Steam client and browse to the Steam installation folder to look for Steam installation you would like to move. Usually, it is in C: Program Files\Steam, delete all the files and folders except for SteamApps & User data folders and Steam.exe.
Now cut and paste the entire Steam folder to another directory and log into your account. As Steam opens, verify your game cache files for those games that are already installed and this issue will probably be fixed.
#7 Prey 2017 Mouse Fix
There is a glitch in the game that does not let the mouse cursor to disappear, just change your resolution and the mouse cursor will disappear.
#8 Prey 2017 Audio Fix
Changing your in-game graphics settings may result in missing audio. The solution to this problem is very simple, just hit Alt+Tab twice and the audio will be back.
