The Intel Coffee Lake CPUs are going to be the 8th generation of CPUs from the company. Even though these were going to be coming out next year, Intel has accelerated its plan in light of the new AMD threat. There have been some speculations surrounding Intel Coffee Lake and now reports are claiming that the 6-core processors will cost the same as the current 4-core models.
Looking at how AMD has the upper hand when it comes to price to core count, this would make sense. This could be a move for Intel to become competitive when it comes to price to performance. Previously we thought that the 6-core variants would be 5-15% more expensive but new reports claim that they will be priced the same as current 4-core variants.
Even if the new chips are cheaper and better priced, we still need better performance as compared to Skylake and Kaby Lake. We know that Intel has gotten away with marginal updates and small boosts in performance with each passing generation but that was because there was no competition in the CPU market.
It will be interesting to see what kind of performance benefits Intel Coffee Lake will have to offer now that Intel knows they are not the only players in the market and that AMD could compete with them easily.
Intel will need to put something well though out on the table when it comes to Intel Coffee Lake CPUs. If users get minor boosts in performance then I am sure that there will be plenty of people that will shift to the AMD Ryzen platform instead of dealing with this nonsense.
Let us know what you think about Intel Coffee Lake CPUs and whether or not you are interested in getting one of these 8th generation chips when they come out later this year.
