A new trailer has shown that we’ll be seeing Joker in Injustice 2, despite his gruesome death at the (literal) hand of Superman in the backstory of the first game. He’ll be a playable character, and so the trailer that shows him off also gives us a glimpse at his moveset.
The Joker’s appearance had previously been spoiled in the game’s achievement list.
The Joker met an untimely (or, perhaps, not timely enough) end in the backstory to the first Injustice game. After failing, constantly, to get a rise out of Batman, the Joker decided to go to Metropolis and toy with Superman. Using Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin along with a nuclear warhead, the Joker caused the deaths of Lois Lane and a huge portion of Metropolis’s population.
Superman got his revenge very quickly by brutally killing the Joker, but that served as his step off the slippery slope and he quickly became a dictator, causing the alternate Batman of that universe to seek the main timeline’s help in stopping him.
Exactly what the story will do to justify us seeing Joker in Injustice 2 remains to be seen, but for now it looks like the Clone Prince of Crime will be back to wreak some more havoc, though whether he’ll be a multiplayer-exclusive character or even the original timeline’s Joker (a more likely prospect) remains to be seen.
The Joker in Injustice 2 has changed outfits, going from his trademark purple suit to a trenchcoat and hat. We don’t get to see much of his moveset either, as he spends most of the trailer getting pummeled by Flash. However, we do get to see the startup of his super move, though not the whole thing; the startup alone knocks Flash out.
Injustice 2 will be releasing on May 16 of this year, for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC. When it comes out, we’ll likely see how the Joker is still in the game.
