A new rumor making the rounds on the internet has pointed towards the possibility of animated Sonic Mania cutscenes. Sonic Mania is an upcoming 2D Sonic game developed by Sega. A short clip of some animation has pointed towards the rumor being valid, though we don’t really know yet.
We know pretty much nothing about it other than the fact that it’s a throwback to older Sonic games, but we’re getting information bit by bit.
The animation clip that pointed towards animated Sonic Mania cutscenes isn’t a very long thing, but it’s enough to get fans excited that they may see animations like the sorts that were at the beginning and end of the Sonic CD game.
The animation was originally posted on the Tumblr of animator Max Collins, whose resume includes working for various studios such as Cartoon Network and Studio Yotta, though it was quickly removed for an unknown reason (likely because Sega made him take it down).
If Sonic Mania really is a throwback to older Sonic games, the possibility of animated Sonic Mania cutscenes will likely drive excitement even higher.
After years of mediocre or outright bad Sonic games, getting one that’s an actual good throwback to the older, better years that made Sonic the Hedgehog a classic figure is definitely a good thing.
There’s no telling when Sonic Mania will be released, but hopefully it and Sonic Forces will both allow the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise to regain some ground and start making good games again.
Sonic Forces and Sonic Mania will both be released on the PC, Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch sometime later this year.
