The Pokemon Company is raking it in big time as new information reveals that the company made more than $3 billion in revenue last year.
Considering last year was the franchise’s 20th Anniversary, the revenue isn’t really a surprise though. The Pokemon Company started off the year in a great way and had a strong retail presence throughout the year.
The two big releases, Pokemon Sun and Moon for Nintendo 3DS undoubtedly contributed to the total revenue of $3.3 billion in 2016. These two games went on to become the third best-selling 3DS titles of all time.
The company’s entire retail presence which includes other licensed products such as anime and trading card game ended up placing The Pokemon Company at 19th in the world with $3.3 million in earnings.
The launch of Pokemon GO, the augmented reality smartphone game only helped further solidify The Pokemon Company as a big winner last year.
According to reports, the smartphone game was downloaded more than 650 million times. That is also why the game went on to become the fastest mobile game to reach $600 million in revenue, earning the record amount in just 90 days.
By comparison, other big contenders like Candy Crush Saga in the mobile gaming market took around 200 days to hit the same mark.
These sales and massive surge in popularity thanks to Pokemon GO bringing the brand to mainstream audience resulted in the company improving their position by 10 spots in the top company’s list.
In 2015, the company was at the 29th spot but in 2016, the increased $1.2 billion retail revenue resulted in them scoring the 19th spot.
Considering how small of a presence The Pokemon Company is, relative to some of the other companies on the list, it is a huge surprise seeing them this successful.
