Resident Evil 7 hasn’t even been out three months and already Capcom is getting the ball rolling on Resident Evil 8. While we don’t really know what all the game is about yet, producer June Takeuchi confirmed that things are moving when it comes to developing the new game, and that 8 will be different.
Resident Evil 7 was a long-awaited return to the survival horror of previous Resident Evil titles, rather than the “action movie with zombies” setup that attempted to replicate the runaway success of Resident Evil 4. These last few games caused Resident Evil to become almost Silent Hill-like in terms of being a “meh” franchise, but RE7 appears to have breathed new life into it.
Because of the success of Resident Evil 7, Capcom will have to put a lot of work in in order to top it with Resident Evil 8. Takeuchi has said however, that 8 will be different from 7, in a certain way. What he meant by that, we can only guess.
From what he says in the rest of the interview, Takeuichi seems to be implying that while the next group of Resident Evil games will be something of the same setup (various characters thrown into crises where they have to survive), he wants to see exactly how far they can take the survival horror angle.
Resident Evil 7 was already noticeably different from other Resident Evil games, being first-person instead of top-down or over-the-shoulder third person, and including less overt plot development along with the large amount of isolated DLC add-ons.
While we can only wait and see what Resident Evil 8 is going to be like (possibly getting some answers maybe at next year’s E3) hopefully it will be able to follow Resident Evil 7’s example and give us another critically acclaimed survival horror game. For now, though, all we can do is watch and wait.
